A Ph.D. Student at Koya University Participated in an International Symposium held in Greenville, South Carolina, USA

Mr. Ahmed Abdulsalam Maaroof, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Koya University and a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the same Faculty in Koya University has participated in the industrial combustion symposium organized by American Flame Research Committee (AFRC).

The symposium took place between 12-14 of September, 2022, in Greenville, South Carolina, USA.

Mr. Ahmed Abdulsalam Maaroof is studying Ph.D. degree in oil and gas engineering with research focus on developing a new air assisted flare for low flow operation conditions, under supervision of Dr. Joseph Smith Professor at Missouri University of Science and Technology, USA and Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Haseeb Sedeeq Zangana Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Koya University.

During the symposium, Mr. Ahmed Abdulsalam Maaroof, published a paper and presented his recent researches on testing a new design of an air assisted flare built specially for low flow operation conditions by taking the advantage of Coanda principle.

The published paper and presentation title were ‘Coanda effect enhanced air assisted flare for low flow operation: cold flow CFD analysis’.

In this research, CFD Code called C3D has been used to simulate the effect of Coanda principle and flow from slots surrounding the stack at the tip of the flare on increasing the cross flow in the stack. Cold flow approach has been applied in this research to measure the change in the momentum of the cross flow.

The results of simulation showed that the design was able to solve the low flow issue in flares by increasing the momentum in the stack, where it has been noticed that as the slot velocities increases the cross flow increases due to decreasing the flow diameter.
